wood in circulation in the Czech Republic, which often ends up in the incinerator after one use.Wood that is already in circulation needs to be kept in its life cycle and used for as long as possible," Tomáš Pipíška from the Institute of Wood Science and Wood Technology at Mendel University explains to CzechCrunch.The university wants to transform the beams primarily into OSB boards, thanks to which wood could continue to exist in wooden buildings.However, several obstacles need to be removed for this.According to Pipíšek, the biggest problem when using old wood is a large amount of dirt.These are screws, nails, or perhaps the remains of plaster.So it has to start with cleaning."If we wanted to reuse the same beam as a beam, then cleaning it is enough.But if we want to make OSB boards from old beams, the procedure is a bit more complicated," explains Pipíška.Since old wood must be made into wood chips, the wood must be sufficiently moist.The more water there is in the wood, the higher the quality of the chips produced and the higher the quality of the OSB boards themselves.But recycled wood has a very low moisture content."Therefore, the quality of the chips might not be sufficient for the resulting OSB board to meet the parameters set by the standard," the scientist describes.The team's next task will be to find out if they are able to produce high-quality boards from 100% recycled material, or if they will have to use a mixture of old and new wood.The use of OSB boards is increasing along with how wooden buildings are becoming more and more popular.This is also one of the reasons why the project on the use of old wood became the winner of the Gregor Johann Mendel Grant Agency's competition this year, which is aimed at young promising scientists.They have special laboratories available for research, thanks to which the industrial process of OSB composite production can be imitated.From chipping to applying glue and pressing to other technical processes.The goal is economic, but also ecological."With each additional use of wood, for example in OSB boards, the amount of harvested trees can be reduced or the harvested wood can be used for other new materials," says Pipíška.According to him, wood waste could serve very well."A tree can be made into a beam that can be, as was the case with the Moulin Rouge beams, embedded somewhere in a building for a hundred years.From this beam, we are then able to produce OSB boards, which we can use in modern wood construction for the next hundred years," adds the scientist.Such OSB boards can then be used again, for example for the production of chipboards, from which furniture can be made."Only then can the wood be used for energy.Instead of a hundred years, the wood could be used for a total of at least 210 years," says Pipíška.But the team from Mendel University will also thoroughly deal with economic aspects.Therefore, experts from the Faculty of Business and Economics are also involved in the project.They will start with market analysis.The data that the faculty already has at their disposal and thanks to which they will evaluate the efficiency of companies that produce OSB boards will also help."In this way, we will not only be able to assess how businesses manage to use inputs in the production of their products, but also find areas where there is currently waste," says Michaela Staňková from the Institute of Statistics and Operational Research.The team will also focus on the costs of producing the designed recycled boards."We realize that it is essential that newly designed products are sufficiently lucrative for companies.So we will have to make a kind of investment plan analogy in order to be able to present to the companies how much they would have to spend in order to be able to produce the high-quality OSB boards that we have designed," adds Staňková.But the researchers will also focus on the consumers themselves.Specifically, they will find out if they will be willing to purchase boards that have a darker color.Recycled OSB boards are darker than classic ones made of spruce."We knew from the beginning that we would need old wood.And beams from building demolition are the best.At that time, the Moulin Rouge started to be torn down, so I contacted the construction manager through a demolition company, with whom I agreed that they would put the beams on a pile for us.Then we went straight with them to the Josef Ressel Research Center in Útěchov," says Pipíška.Recycled boards will also meet safety parameters.In wooden buildings, OSB boards are used, for example, for floors, and it is necessary that they do not break, but also do not sag.The beams from the Moulin Rouge will
