Strasburg Board of Education meeting

KEY ACTION The board hired several employees and accepted two resignations.

Discussion: The board granted a one-year certified contract to Peyton Speicher as intervention specialist, and a one-year classified contract to Tana Martin, Food Services Coordinator. Ron Miller was hired as varsity boys basketball coach. Superintendent Adam Hall said there were 20 applications for the head boys basketball coach and 17 for the intervention specialist. 

The board accepted the resignations of Lana Williams, Food Services Coordinator and Lacey Kinsey, band director, both effective at the end of the 2021-22 school year. In another matter, Reno Contipelli, Northern Regional Manager for the Oho School Boards Association, and Sally Green, president of the Northeast Regional OSB Association, presented awards to board president Wes Hostetler a 20-year service award and Kevin Harvey, board member a first training certificate and a STAR Service Award.  

• Accepted a School Inclusion grant from the Tuscarawas County BDD for $25,000. 

• ranted one-year supplemental coaching contracts to Kaylyn Archer, varsity volleyball head coach; Ron Hurst, head cross country; Troy McClellan, head boys varsity golf and head varsity girls basketball. 

• Briefly discussed the multi-purpose facility which, if approved, would be constructed at the rear of the school. No cost estimates on the facility have been presented to the board only a rough draft. The district would use ESSER funds toward the project. 

• Heard a grant was awarded to the village through OMEGA. The school provided all the information necessary for the grant which was awarded to the village for $150,000. The village contributed $35,000 toward the project. New sidewalks are being installed on the west side of Bodmer Avenue. Some sidewalks will not be replaced. Phase II of the project to install new sidewalks will begin in 2023. 

• Learned the high school social studies department is investigating the purchase of new text books. High School/Middle School Principal Kevin McDougal said the books will be reviewed from three companies before moving forward and make sure the books are appropriate for the district. 

• Heard the Stark County Educational Service Center teacher of the year ceremony will be held April 26. Two Strasburg teachers Frank Kruger, is the district Teacher of the Year and Lacey Kinsey, former band director, Rookie Teacher of the year. 

• Learned Josh Youngen. Strasburg/ Buckeye Career Center student, will be recognized on May 4 at the Overcoming Obstacles ceremony. The event is hosted by the East Central Ohio Educational Service Center.

• Recognized March students of the month, Reagan Eberhardt, a sophomore and Austin Slabaugh, a seventh-grader. Each received a plaque, awarded by the district and local Lion’s Club. 

• The annual district talent show will be held at 7 p.m. May 5 in the cafeteria.  

• The middle school math tournament will be held May 11-12; the top ten senior awards banquet will be held May 10 and Buckeye Career Center will hold an awards ceremony on May 17 and 18.  High School graduation will be held at 2 p.m. May 22. 

• The freshman and eighth grade students will be traveling to Washington DC next week.

• The prom will be held April 29 at Union Country Club in Dover. 

• May 1-7 is teacher appreciation week.
